Meet Alfie, kicking goals at 11 years old

Every parent wants their child to live a life filled with joy, confidence, and opportunity. Diana and Rob, parents of 11-year-old Alfie, see this today as they watch their son in his new soccer team with his mates.

But as an infant, this future felt uncertain. Diagnosed with Nystagmus as an infant, Alfie experiences involuntary rapid eye movement and flickering that affects his vision. Diana and Rob realised he would never see the world in the same way they did and reached out to Vision Australia for the support he needed to take on the world in his own way.

“It’s amazing to have such expertise available to ensure that Alfie is able to fulfil any dream that he may have growing up,” says Diana.

The team at Vision Australia has been there for Alfie ever since, from support at home and in the classroom to getting around independently. Now he’s kicking goals both on and off the soccer field.

This year Alfie and his parents are taking on 100K Your Way for the first time, inspired to help others in the blind and low vision community to find their confidence and stay active.

"Jess Gallagher inspired me to do 100K Your Way this year, I really look up to her," says Alfie. “It’s nice to see someone like me doing big things,” he adds.

His Mum Diana also wants to thank everyone that is participating or supporting 100K Your Way in 2026. “With your help to support Vision Australia, fears can be replaced by determination, by pride and by hope,” she says.

You can support Alfie with a donation or follow his lead by signing up for 100K Your Way 2026.
