Meet Sam, Vision Australia Radio host and producer
Sam Colley, 34, has been connected to Vision Australia since birth, living with low vision caused by coloboma and nystagmus. Legally blind in one eye due to microphthalmia, Sam’s condition has influenced his life in many ways—but it hasn’t defined him. Today, he works as the host and producer of Talking Vision on Vision Australia Radio, where he keeps people with print disabilities informed and entertained.
Sam’s journey with Vision Australia began when he was born, with early home visits, Vision Australia has been a constant source of support. Their home advisors not only guided his parents, but also encouraged Sam to push beyond his comfort zone and embrace new skills.
This year, Sam is taking on his second 100K Your Way challenge, walking 100 kilometers to fundraise for the vital services Vision Australia Radio provides. For Sam, being active is a new adventure. “I’m not usually an outdoorsy person, but this challenge is a fantastic way to enjoy nature, reap the health benefits of regular exercise, and try something different,” he says.
Sam’s participation is deeply personal. “Giving back to an organization that’s supported me since day one is really special,” he shares. He’s passionate about raising funds to ensure Vision Australia Radio can continue delivering crucial services to the community.
“The most important thing to remember is you can do it your way,” Sam says. “You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll surprise yourself in so many positive ways over the month. It’s just a great experience.”
