Jimmy's story

Jimmy’s incredible story began the moment he was born after being diagnosed with a genetic condition that resulted in glaucoma, aniridia and nystagmus. This means Jimmy struggles with distance and depth perception, as well as focusing on near sighted activities. At just 3 weeks old, Jimmy underwent his first surgery, and by age 2, had undergone a total of 15.

Vision Australia have supported Jimmy since he was just 5 weeks old, providing him with a number of services and support, including Orientation and Mobility services and Occupational therapy. Jimmy’s mother, Ana, has recently worked to deepen her connection with Vision Australia:

“In 2024, I joined the Vision Australia team to educate myself and learn what Vision Australia does for children, and how I can better prepare myself and Jimmy for the upcoming school years” Ana explains.

“My hope for Jimmy is that he is not limited by his vision to achieve his goals. That he is successful and happy in his life and able to travel the world independently and be self-sufficient. I hope that with technological advances it will help Jimmy and other low vision individuals be able to ‘see’ and navigate the world with ease” Ana says.

This Christmas, Ana and Jimmy are looking forward to their annual trip to the Hunter Valley Gardens to see Christmas lights, a cherished family tradition since 2021. To make this festive season even more special, Ana and her loved ones will be taking part in Vision Australia’s Santa Fun Run, helping to raise funds and awareness for kids just like Jimmy!

“This is a great opportunity to join in for a good cause, raise awareness and support the kids of Australia who are visually impaired,” Ana explains.
