Madeline's story

Born with oculocutaneous albinism, a condition that leads to an absence of melanin in the skin, eyes and hair, Madeline is legally blind. Vision Australia has been a part of Madeline’s life since the beginning, and have continued to support her throughout the course of her life.

“I have been a client of Vision Australia since childhood and have been fortunate to access many services over the years, including occupational therapy, assistive technology and most recently Seeing Eye Dogs,” Madeline explains.

Although having grown up in regional Victoria, Madeline currently lives in Melbourne, and is an avid runner, swimmer and cyclist. Having joined Achilles Melbourne in 2017, Madeline has had the opportunity to increase her confidence in being active and participate in many events, including being the first person who is blind to complete the Lorne Pier to Pub swim, alongside her trusted guide.

“Achilles Melbourne has played a huge role in helping me lead an active and healthy lifestyle. Thanks to the incredible support of their volunteer sighted guides, I’ve been able to participate in many running events, including completing my first marathon,” Madeline says.

Thanks to Vision Australia’s ability to support Madeline from a young age, she’s able to get out in her community and make a difference, while doing the things she loves.

“Without the support of Vision Australia, I wouldn’t be as involved in my community as I am today. Growing up, their support helped me learn vital skills and access information, which has allowed me to live independently. Thanks to Vision Australia, I’ve been able to maintain both volunteering and employment, and continue to take an active part in the world around me,” Madeline continues.

This year, Madeline will be taking part in her second Santa Fun Run and calls on her community to join her in getting together for a good cause. Every dollar raised from Santa Fun Run ensures Vision Australia can support children who are blind or have low vision to grow into confident and inspiring adults just like Madeline. You can help transform young lives this Christmas with a donation to Santa Fun Run.
