7 fun activities for clocking up K’s in the holidays
The four-day long weekend is a great time to connect with family and friends while clocking up kilometres for 100K Your Way. From new adventures to quality time with loved ones, here’s seven ideas to help you make the most of the Easter break and get closer to your goal.
Walking and hiking are great ways to put in some kilometres while discovering hidden gems like lush rainforests, panoramic views and Australia’s famous coastal trails. Pack a picnic, bring your camera, and make a day of it as every step brings you closer to your goal.
To cater for all ages and abilities, you can find a list of inclusive inclusive trails here including their length and difficulty. Happy travels!
Don’t let Santa’s freshly gifted bikes gather dust! Trade the tablets for a family biking adventure. A leisurely 30-minute bike ride can clock up around 8-10km, more if you’re experienced and not riding with young kids.
If you’re looking for a full day cycling adventure, some easy and picturesque biking trails include:
- Bass Coast Rail Trail, Victoria
A 90-minute drive out of Melbourne, Victoria’s only coastal rail-trail is 17km and includes spectacular beach views and a ride over a striking 91m-long trestle bridge
- Lake Burley-Griffen, Canberra
All of Canberra is pretty bike-friendly, but the 35km track around the lake is a fun way to tour our nation's capital with plenty of interesting stops on the way.
- Terrey Hills Tracks, Northern Beaches of NSW
Clocking in at 21kms, there are a few trails around this stunning bushland. Head toward Peach Trees lookout as a reward for your hard work.
- Clarence Foreshore Trail, Hobart Following the Derwent River, this 14.5km trail is dotted with plenty of playgrounds and has good options for all abilities, including little legs!
- Rottnest Island, Perth
Some of WA’s most popular and beloved family cycling trails can be found on Rottnest Island, with three trails ranging from 4 – 22km. With no cars to watch out for (only quokkas!), it’s a must-do for Perth locals and visitors alike.
- Moreton Bay cycleway, Brisbane The Brisbane River is one of the most popular and easy trails in Brisbane, but for more coastal views, you can find a great 11km cycleway that skirts the bay along Redcliffe.
Grab a friend or meet some new ones by signing up to a fitness class. It will shake up your routine, keep you active all autumn and help burn off the hot cross buns!
Our Active Partner, Planet Fitness, offers free personalised fitness programs plus small, trainer-led classes for every member. You can trial it for yourself on April 1st as Planet Fitness is just one of the participating gyms that are offering free day passes to launch 100K Your Way.
Swimming laps is one way to track distance, but even 10 minutes of waterplay and swimming can equate to around 1.46kms of activity. Grabs the floaties and take the kids down to your local pool for a splash. If you’re looking for some thrills, our active partner WaterMarc Banyule in Greensborough also has a splash park and two giant water slides.
If you’ve got a big family get together planned for Good Friday or Easter Sunday, pop a friendly match of backyard cricket or tennis on the agenda. 30 minutes of cricket will clock up roughly 3,900 steps or around 2.8 - 3km of activity. Playing a game of tag with the kids? Count it!
There are lots of great holiday activities that require spending the day on foot, like a trip to the zoo or picnic at the botanic gardens.
For something a bit different, try a day trip to a local tourist town for a nice walk to browse new shops, antiques and maybe an old-fashioned lolly shop. Think towns like Daylesford, Ballarat, Port Fairy, Hahndorf, Fremantle, Georgetown, Richmond, Bathurst, Walhalla and many more.
Did someone say “walkies?” April is a beautiful time for a stroll in the park with your canine companion, letting them run amok in the crunchy red and gold leaves. It’s also a good chance to head to the local dog beach and feel the sand in your toes before the winter chill sets in for the year.
